1. Action to conserve plants and animals in their natural habitat. Operating units are varied, emphasizing national parks, biological reserves, genetic reserves, ecological stations, wildlife sanctuaries etc. It is believed that the material living under these conditions is under direct influence of selective forces of nature and, therefore, continuous evolution and adaptation to the environment, having a selective advantage in relation to the material that grows or is maintained under conditions ex situ.
2. Conservation of natural habitats and the maintenance and recovery of viable populations of species in their natural environment and in the case of domesticated or cultivated species, in environments where they have developed their characteristic properties.
