  1. In this activity, data and information are generated in both ex situ and in situ. Ex situ germplasm is maintained in the short, medium or long term depending on the characteristics of species and organized in collections or in the Banking Network for Genetic Resources (WETZEL, BUSTAMANTE, 1999, Goedert et al, 2011 apud in Costa et al 2007). Maintenance is made with plants in the field, in greenhouses, in vitro, and with seeds in cold chambers (-20 ° C, ie the long-term retention. Also contemplated in this activity are the data and information generated by the multiplication, regeneration or subculturing of accessions when necessary. In the in situ form are preserved populations of native species in their natural environment, where the continued evolution and adaptation of species to the environment is possible. (COSTA et al. 2007).[1]
  2. In a broad sense, it is the set of activities and policies to ensure the continued availability and existence of a resource.
  3. In a narrower sense, is the storage and guard germplasm under ideally conditions, allowing the maintenance of its integrity.
  4. Conservation includes preservation, which is used for germplasm stored at cryogenic temperatures.[2]
