All the gene s present in a particular population of an organism mating, at a given time. Generally, the concept applies to members of populations of the same species with higher fertility due to common phylogenetic relationship, but deviant situations can occur with fertility reaching other common species and even genre. The gene pool of a species cultivated is composed of three levels of possible genetic exchanges among participants. The primary gene pool (GP1) comprises stocks of domesticated crop and wild parental forms that gave rise to or influenced its formation. The secondary gene pool (GP2) comprises the wild species that intersect with the main crop and produce offspring, although the process usually takes up with some difficulty and fertility levels are relatively low. The tertiary gene pool (GP3) comprises the wild species that only intersect with the main crop through special treatments such as protoplast fusion etc. Here, the genetic relationship is low and the F1 progeny are usually sterile.[1]
